Senate Blocks DADT Repeal

We live in a world where being apart of the LGBT is completely normal. However, members of the LGBT community still face discrimination in the military. These men and women (regardless of their sexual orientation) have made a promise to “serve and protect our nation.” In 1994, the Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1994 (Pub.L. 103-160) which enabled this policy.

For nearly 17 years, openly gay men and lesbians in our military have been silenced. Over the last couple of months an “Anti-DADT” movement has been sweeping across the nation. President Barack Obama along with Democratic members of Congress and even Lady Gaga asked for this policy to go!

On September 21, 2010, 56 Senator rejected change and voted against S.3454 (http://bit.ly/cFlECR) . In order to break the filibuster and invoke cloture 60 votes were needed to proceed. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2011 (S.3454) contained both the DADT repeal amendments and the DREAM act. Joining the Republicans in their filibuster efforts were Democratic Senators Mark Pryor and Blanche Lincoln, both from Arkansas. According to Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) this is the first time that the Senate has filibustered a defense authorization bill.

So what happens now?

During the vote, Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) voted against the bill (a procedural tactic). This enables him to recover the bill at another time. More than likely, S.3454 will be brought up after the midterm elections or better known as “Lame Duck Session.”

Within a blink of an eye, over 17 million acres of land have been destroyed in Pakistan. But why? Due to unprecedented monsoon rain, the country has been covered in water for months. The flooding has affected the lives of 20 million people and has killed over 2,000.

Approximately $687 million dollars has been donated in humanitarian assistance. The United States has donated $150 million dollars, 56,000+ ready meals and CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters to help in the relief effort.

What Recess? Emergency Session!

Nancy Pelosi summoned members of the House of Representatives from their August recess to vote on H.R.1586 “Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act”. This bill (now a law) authorized funding for state education and Medicaid programs. The $26 billion jobs bill will PROTECT approximately 300, 000 teacher and nonfederal government workers from layoffs.

The final vote was 247-161 (mostly along party lines)

President Barack Obama immediately signed it into law on 08/10/10.

On August 9, 2010, former Senator Theodore Fulton "Ted" Stevens lost his life in a tragic plane crash, which claimed four other lives.

Stevens’s legacy is tangled with controversy, corruption and indictments. However, Alaskans view Stevens as a hero for his constant devotion to The Last Frontier. His congressional career spans over 38 years.

The “Clip of the Week” is Senator Stevens’s final speech on the Senate floor on November 20, 2008, which received a standing ovation! (a rare occasion in the Senate)

Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of former U.S. President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is officially a married woman. On July 31, 2010 at the Astor Courts Estate in Rhinebeck, New York Chelsea exchanged vows with American financier Marc Mezvinsky.

NOTE: Vera Wang, Burberry, and Oscar de la Renta provided dresses and the Grooms tuxedo for the lavish affair.

Clip Of The Week: Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) Goes Ballistic

Only July 29th, 2010 the U.S House of Representatives debated H.R.847, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010. This bill would have provided approximately $7.4 billion dollars to 9/11 recovery and rescue workers (Heroes in my eyes) who had health problems stemming from the toxic dust. The final vote was 255-159, which meant the bill failed to reach the two-thirds majority.

Devastated with this outcome and angered by Rep. Peter King previous remarks, Rep. Anthony Weiner rushed to the podium and unleashed his fury.

Weiner attacked those [mostly targeted toward Rep. Peter King] who "stand up and say, 'Oh, if only we had a different process we'd vote yes.' You vote yes if you believe yes! You vote in favor of something if you believe it's the right thing! If you believe it's the wrong thing, you vote no!"

All of the points Rep. Weiner mentioned in his 2-minute rant were true! Congressional Democrats need to realize NOW is the time to call out the Republicans about their distortions, harmful agendas, and bold-faced lies. Democrats need more fire and passion like Rep. Weiner (D-NY) and Rep. Grayson (D -FL ).

We are days away from the Congressional August Recess. With that in mind, let’s take a look back at the month of July.

For nearly four months, Americans on both sides of the aisle have been concerned over the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill). Since April 20, millions of gallons of oil have spilled into the Gulf. However on July 15, 2010 that changed. Around 2:25 P.M (EST), media outlets and social networking sites buzzed with news that BP managed to cap the oil well.

After countless PR blunders and lack of empathy regarding this oil spill, BP announced that Chief Executive Officer Tony Hayward would be leaving the company. On July 27th, 2010 BP announced that Bob Dudley would replace Hayward. BP's CEO-in-waiting Bob Dudley is the first American CEO in the company’s history and a native to the Gulf region. As of July 28th, 2010 BP has spent 32 billion dollars on the oil spill thus far and a quarterly loss of $17.2 billion.

In the month of July, two landmark legislation's were passed: Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (Financial Reform) and American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act of 2010 (Unemployment extensions). President Barack Obama signed both of these bills into law.

The President and first family (Michelle, Malia and Sasha) took a summer vacation to Maine "The Pine Tree State". Of course, this came with criticism from right-wing pundits. During his vacation, the President mingled with locals, visited Acadia National Park and had time to grab a coconut ice cream cone. Yum!

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin (D) appointed his former counsel Carte Goodwin to fill the late Senator Byrd’s seat. Goodwin was sworn into the Senate on July 20, 2010.

SC Senate Candidate Alive Green gave his first public speech since being “elected”. It was much better than the Don Lemon interview a couple weeks ago.

Sarah Palin decided to tweet about her opposition to Mosque being built near the Ground Zero site. In the process, she created a new word, Refudiate and compared herself to William Shakespeare.

Nelson Mandela turned 92.

After 5,880 Minutes and 64 games, Spain beat the Netherlands to become the 2010 FIFA World Cup champions.

On June 27^th, 2010, Senator Byrd was admitted to Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax County, Virginia. Media outlets reported that the esteemed Senator from West Virginia was “seriously ill” and was suffering from heat stroke and dehydration.

Earlier the next morning, my Blackberry was flooded with emails and text messages alerting of Senator Robert Byrd’s passing.

Senator Robert Bryd was the longest-serving member of Congress with 20,996 days and 18,689 roll-call votes.

Clip Of The Week: Mama Grizzlies

With a title like that you would think you were about to watch some kind of adult “entertainment.”

However, this video paid homage to “Mama Grizzles” better known as "common-sense conservative women.”

For a majority of the video, Sarah Palin’s voice speaks over a collection of photos showing devoted Palinites at political appearances over the years.

In the video Palin warns Washington (better yet Capitol Hill) “a whole stampede of pink elephants crossing the line and the ETA, stampeding through, is November 2, 2010."

In retrospect, the “web video” has a similar feel and tone to her prior campaign ads. All that was missing was her infamous “Palin wink.”

Gen. Stanley McChrystal, President Barack Obama

In the span of 24 hours, General Stanley A. McChrystal has become a household name thanks to freelance journalist Michael Hastings. In the article entitled, "The Runaway General” , General McChrystal made a mockery of James L. Jones (National Security Advisor) , Karl Eikenberry (US Ambassador to Afghanistan) and even Vice President Joe Biden.

In the article, we learned that McChrystal was "disappointed" with his first acquaintance with President Obama, stating that the President was "uncomfortable and intimidated.” However, most of the considerable damage was caused by General McChrystal’s aids that referred to Vice President Joe Biden as “Bite me” and called National Security Adviser Jim Jones, a "clown who was stuck in 1985."

Within hours, the article spread across media outlets and social networking sites. Many voiced their opinions stating that McChrystal’s remarks were insubordinate and he needed to be reprimanded for them.

Earlier today, Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s fate was sealed. President Obama announced that McChrystal had been relieved from duty and Gen. David Petraeus will be taking over in Afghanistan. In his statement to the press, McChrystal stated that he “strongly supports the President’s strategy in Afghanistan and am deeply committed to our coalition forces, our partner nations, and the Afghan people.”

Memorial Day...

The last Monday in May, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

During the broadcasting of John King U.S.A, the audience was provided with a link to see all of the soldiers that have died in Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom (which is quickly approaching the 6,000 mark)

With the interactive Home and Away page, I was able to find service men/women in my area who gave their lives for this great nation.

The closest person to my home address was to Lt. Col. Michael J. McMahon (assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division) from West Hartford, CT.

He died on November 27, 2004 leaving behind a wife and three children. Yesterday, I printed out a picture of McMahon and carried it around, sharing his story with others.

He gave HIS life for MY protection. His sacrifice should not be forgotten. Please, thank all of the service men and women in the five branches of military (Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard) for constantly protecting us (past, present and future)

Remember their legacy.

Retirement Lane: John Paul Stevens

"Retirement Lane" has recieved it's most esteemed resident to date, Supreme Court Justice John Paul Steven. On April 9, 2010 he announced his retirement from the nation's highest court at the end of this session (this summer). In his resignation letter to President Barack Obama he stated the following:

My dear Mr. President:

Having concluded that it would be in the best interests of the Court to have my successor appointed and confirmed well in advance of the commencement of the Court’s next Term, I shall retire from regular active service as an Associate Justice, under the provisions of 28 U.S.C. § 371(b), effective the next day after the Court rises for the summer recess this year. Most respectfully yours,

John Paul Stevens was appointed by President Gerald Ford. On December 19, 1975, after being confirmed 98–0 (by the Senate) he took his seat. He is the fourth-longest-serving justice in the court’s history. He served under seven presidencies (Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama)

A –Attorney Generals - Attorney Generals from 13 states (SC, NE, TX, MI, UT, PA, AL, SD, ID, WA, CO & LA) have sued the federal government over health care reform.

B – Bills, Bills, Bills! The U.S House passed the Senate changes to the Reconciliation bill! Final vote was 220-207.

C - Constitutional Convention - Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer (R-SC) believes a Constitutional Convention is needed repeal health care reform.

D – Drill, Baby, Drill! President Barack Obama has announced plans to permit offshore drilling.

E – Earthquakes – In the month of March alone, earthquakes rattle Haiti, Japan, Turkey, and Chile.

F - FireNancyPelosi.com - RNC Chairman Michael Steele is advocating the new GOP website - FireNancyPelosi.com after the passing of health care reform.

House Passes Historic Health Care Bill

At 10:47 PM (EST), 219 Democratic Representatives made history! H.R. 3590, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act cleared the United States House of Representatives! The final vote was 219 – 212.

President Barack Obama will sign the health care bill into law Tuesday March 22 , 2010 at 11:15 AM EST.

YES WE CAN, YES WE DID!

2010 United States Census

Today in the mail I received a large white envelope with “United Census” in big, bold, black letters. Over the next couple of days, 308,874,561 million citizens across the nation will be receiving the similar envelope.

My Census Form (via Blackberry)

The Constitution requires that every 10 years the U.S Census get a official count of every resident living in the United States:

"The actual enumeration shall be made within three years after the first meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent term of 10 years, in such manner as they shall by Law direct." - Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution of the United States

Once completed, the Census will give numerous communities millions of dollars in federal funds.

It’s very simple:

2. Mail the form back in the postage-paid envelope provided.

Twitter, Don Lemon & I

The social networking site Twitter has given me the chance to interact with hundreds of people, including some of my favorite political icons, state representatives, and news anchors.

As a political junkie, a majority of my “TV time” is spent watching CNN, CSPAN, and MSNBC.

After a long day of running around, I came home and turned on the ‘CNN Newsroom’ with Don Lemon. While he was speaking, he quickly reached for these amazing pair of black glasses. I was in love. I grabbed my Blackberry and tweeted him the following:

“I love @donlemoncnn glasses! I want a pair.”

A couple of minutes later, while browsing through my twitter replies I started screaming with glee. Don Lemon had actually responded to me. For the next 5 minutes, I proceeded to jump up and down in my room. (NOTE- Don Lemon happens to be my favorite CNN anchor)

Here was his response:

This tweet made my day so much brighter. Don Lemon, if you are reading this, thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my tweet you put a huge permanent smile on my face!

On March 9, 2010, the White House launched a new campaign, “Putting Americans in Control of Their Health Care.” Each day, new numbers are posted showing the statistical data of health care reform. The numbers represent some aspect of health care and the effects on American citizens. Here are the latest numbers:

$1,115 – That’s the average premium for employer-sponsored family coverage per month in 2009. Annually, that amounts to $13,375 [Source]

8 - The number of people every minute who are denied coverage, charged a higher rate, or otherwise discriminated against because of a pre-existing condition. [ Source]

625 – Number of people who lost their health insurance EVERY HOUR in 2009 [Source]

41- That’s the number of leading economists who sent a letter to President Obama and Congress yesterday urging the swift passage of comprehensive health insurance reform [Source]

Political Gossip: March 2010

State Sen. Roy Ashburn (R-CA) was arrested for a DUI after leaving a gay nightclub club. NOTE: He has a strong history of opposing gay rights. Approximately one week later, during a interview with KERN radio host Inga , Ashburn (R) admitted he was gay.

According to Ashburn:

"Those are the words [I am gay] that have been so difficult for me for so long. But I am gay. But it is something that is personal and . . . I felt with my heart that being gay didn't affect -- wouldn't affect -- how I did my job.”

I personally think that Ashburn needs to publicity apologize to the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) citizens of California. He denied them rights by voting along party lines, when in all actuality he was a member of their community.

It seems like “resigning” is the easiest thing to do now in politics. From Republican and Democratic Congressmen to local state officials, everyone is dropping off like flies.

It just so happens the White House staff is not neglected from this contagious bug.

On February 26, 2010 , the White House Social Secretary, Desirée Rogers, announced she would be resigning. This just came after the unshocking news that New York Governor David Paterson would be resigning as well. (Remind you, David Paterson is the midst of a major political scandal).

On February 24, 2009, our bipartisan Senate was finally able to overcome differences and pass an important bill. The Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act (H.R.2847) better known as the “Job’s bill,” made its way through the Senate chamber by a vote of 70-28.

Here are some key aspects of the legislation, per the AP:

Hiring tax incentives — Exempts employers from paying the 6.2 percent Social Security payroll tax this year on newly hired workers that have been unemployed for 60 days or more. Provides additional $1,000 tax credit for workers retained for at least a year. Cost: $13 billion.

Highway programs — Reauthorizes through the end of 2010 the highway trust fund to use gasoline taxes to help state and local governments pay for highway and transit projects. Deposits an additional $20 billion into the trust fund.

Equipment write-offs — Permits businesses to write off equipment purchases as a business expense rather than depreciating them over time. Cost: $35 million.

According to the U.S. Senate Web site , Sen. Nelson (D-NE) was the only Democrat to vote “Nay” against the bill. However, Senators Hutchison (R-TX) and Lautenberg (D-NJ) did not partake in the vote.

On February 11, 2010, another Democrat announced his retirement. For nearly 15 years, Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) has represented Rhode Island's first congressional district. He is also the son of the late Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy.

The latest news of Rep. Patrick Kennedy's retirement has put a strain on the Democratic efforts to maintain the majorities in the Senate and House for 2010.

On January 12, 2010 , the country of Haiti was hit by a massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake. The capital city (and largest), Port-au-Prince is a scene of utter destruction. According to the Red Cross , over 3 million people have been affected by the Haiti quake. The estimates of the number of dead range from 100,000 to 150,000.

In recent days, the World has come together to help this struggling nation. The United States, France, Canada, China, Venezuela, Mexico, and Germany have pledged financial, military, and medical resources. On January 14, 2010, President Obama announced $100 million dollars in aid to Haiti. There as also been buzz that France is speeding up plans to cancel Haiti's Debt, which is an estimated $641 million dollars.

I cannot totally relate to the people of Haiti, but going through Hurricanes has changed my perspective on life. I have experienced days without clean water, no electricity, and relying on government assistance (FEMA in my circumstance) .

Today, the Transportation Security Administration issued new security directives to all United States and international air carriers with inbound flights to the U.S. effective January 4, 2010.The new directive includes long-term, sustainable security measures developed in consultation with law enforcement officials and our domestic and international partners.Because effective aviation security must begin beyond our borders, and as a result of extraordinary cooperation from our global aviation partners, TSA is mandating that every individual flying into the U.S. from anywhere in the world traveling from or through nations that are state sponsors of terrorism or other countries of interest will be required to go through enhanced screening. The directive also increases the use of enhanced screening technologies and mandates threat-based and random screening for passengers on U.S. bound international flights.

Eight years ago, a good friend of mine told me that they had HIV.

I have to admit, it was an eye-opening experience for me. (I was only 12 at the time)

You always hear people say , “someone you may know as AIDS.”

Usually, many people just push the thought aside, but when it actually happens, reality hits you.

Ever since that moment, I have made an effort to help raise awareness on HIV/AIDS.

-There are 33.4 million people living with HIV worldwide

- 2.1 million children (under the age of 15) have HIV

- In 2008 , there were 2 million HIV- related deaths
